The Italian composer Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi was born on 9 or 10 October 1813
in Le Roncole, in the Duchy of Parma. Although his musical talent was discovered early,
Verdi was rejected to visit the conservatory in Milan in 1832. He received - funded by a patron -
private lessons and - years later - he celebrated with his operas great success - not only in Milan.
As an opera composer Verdi was the largest and most evenly matched opponent of Richard Wagner.
Both were born in the same year and created next to each other new but different opera concepts,
which influenced the opera culture of the 19th Century. They still belong to the core of the
repertoire of all major opera houses.
Giuseppe Verdi died on 27 January 1901 in Milan.
In October 2013, the music world commemorates his 200th Birthday.
