Express letter from Bayreuth to Berchtesgaden
The letter shown here, sent from the administration of the Bayreuth Festival to Berchtesgaden on January 20, 1934, bears the correct postage using stamps from the Wagner issue: the rate for a letter weighing up to 20 grams was 12 pfennigs, and the surcharge for rural express delivery was 80 pfennigs. The recipient was Christian Ebersberger, the owner of an upholstery business in “Wagner City Bayreuth,” who was evidently staying at the Hotel Moritz on the Obersalzberg at the time. Letters from the Wagner family estate confirm that Christian Ebersberger maintained personal contact with the Wagner family.
