Young Collectors

Under the motto “Young Musicians … … young collectors” Motivgruppe Musik supports children and young collectors up to the age of 25 years who are interested in collecting stamps related to music and dance.
 


Young collectors can join our philatelic music study group one year for free. They get a philatelic welcome pack suited to their collection, four issues of our bulletin and access to the members only section of our website. In addition, the board shall seek for sponsorship and donations to offer a free membership for the young collectors also in the following years.

In memoriam: Montserrat Caballé

On 6 October 2018, the Spanish opera singer Montserrat Caballé died at the age of 85 years. After studying in Barcelona and Milan and she made her debut in 1956 in Basel and was sung until 1965 among others in Saarbruecken and Bremen. In 1965, she wowed the audience on behalf of Marilyn Horne at Carnegie Hall and debuted in the same year at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Montserrat Caballé was a frequent guest at festivals and also often appeared as a concert singer.

The focus of her repertoire was on the operas of Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini but also Verdi and Puccini. Characteristics of her lyrical voice was the sensual beauty and an extraordinary piano. Montserrat Caballé was considered one of the greatest sopranos and with over 4000 Aufritten as the last great opera diva.

Otis Redding: “Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay”

The song “Sittin ‘On The Dock Of The Bay” was jointly written by Otis Redding (*9.9.1941; +10.12.1967) and guitarist Steve Cropper and recorded 1967, just a few days before Otis Redding died. The single is the first one that posthumous reached No. 1 on the US Hot 100 Billboard charts. The song has received numerous awards and is one of the 100 “Most important American musical works of the 20th century”.

Our next annual meeting will be held from 27 to 29 July 2018 in the context of the stamp exhibition TREVERIS 2018 in Trier.
 
For our study group we have already reserved a contingent of rooms in the Hotel Constantin. The hotel is centrally located beside the River Moselle, very close to the Roman bridge.

“Can I use this item in my exhibit or not ?”
This question is the headline of a thematic seminar organized by our study group in the context of the exhibition. Experienced judges will show some examples and explain, why these items can be used in a thematic exhibit – or maybe not. In addition, participants are invited to bring their own pieces for discussion.

This beautifully designed book gives a comprehensive overview of the Greek and Cypriot issues on music, dance and theater. Not only are all stamps listed and pictured, with Michel, Scott and Yvert catalog numbers, but also all special and advertising postmarks, as well as postal stationery and private issues. Especially helpful is the 75-page Encyclopedia with detailed information on all documented persons, theaters, dances, etc.

Exhibition “School and School Subjects”




From September 9 to 30, 2017 a stamp show on “School and School Subjects”can be seen in the district library in Frankfurt-Rödelheim (Radilostr. 17-19). With the exhibit “The Notation – The ABC of Music” also the music classes are represented.

For the exhibition a personalized stamp has been created, depicting the real timetable of a Frankfurt high school. As one can see in the picture above, NO music lessons are provided. After an appropriate hint to the organizer of the exhibition a small number of reprints have been made – WITH music lessons on Tuesday in the first hour.

Darius Milhaud

The French composer Darius Milhaud was born in Marseilles on September 4, 1892, he died on June 22, 1974 in Geneva. In September 2017 his birthday marks the 125th time. Milhaud studied at the Paris Conservatory, first violin and later composition. In 1916 he accompanied his friend Paul Claudel to Rio de Janeiro where he met the Brazilian folklore and popular music that strongly has influenced his music. After returning to France, he was part of the “Groupe des Six” headed by the composer Eric Satie. Milhaud composed more than 400 works from all the major music genres (opera, symphonic music, concertos, chamber and vocal music, songs, film music). Many of his works show influences of the then emerging jazz. After the outbreak of World War 2, Milhaud lead composition classes in Oakland and later in Paris. Among his students were Dave Brubeck, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis.
 



 
 
The video shows the pianist duo Victor and Luis del Valle with one of the most famous chamber works by Darius Milhaud, “Scaramouche” in an unusual version with two pianos and percussion.
