David Bowie stamp already sold out !

At the beginning of January it was still thought that Deutsche Post had (once again) a temporary delivery problem with the David Bowie stamp. In the meantime, Deutsche Post has confirmed that the 3.21 million copies of the David Bowie 75th birthday stamp were already sold out on January 5 – just 3 days after the stamp was issued. A reprint of the stamp is not planned and – contrary to the usual practice – there will be no stamp set with a self-adhesive version this time either.
One can only speculate about the reasons for the early sale: Was it the numerous David Bowie fans who bought this stamp en masse ? Or was it simply the fact that the 85 cent stamp was the first commemorative stamp for standard letter postage after the postage increase on January 1st, 2022 ? In any case, the result is evidence of an inadequate market analysis by those responsible at Deutsche Post.
It will be interesting to see what conclusions Deutsche Post draws from this matter: the start of a new series “Legends of Rock/Pop Music” has been announced for 2023. Will there be enough stamps for normal postal customers, stamp collectors and music fans ?
