Yehudi Menuhin Trophy 2022 – Most popular Music Stamp 2021
United Nations Postal Administration
“Imagine there’s no countries, … Nothing to kill or die for” John Lennon sang these words in his famous song “Imagine” in 1971. That these lines are still relevant today and that Lennon was far from being the only one who longs for a world in peace, is also reflected in the result of the vote for the most popular music stamp 2021. The stamp series with John Lennon’s anthem, issued by the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) on September 21, 2021, emerged as the winner with a clear distance (268 votes, 9%). UNPA’s Chief Designer Rorie Katz will be awarded the Yehudi Menuhin Trophy 2022 on behalf of all those who have contributed to the creation of this stamp series: Martin Mörck as illustrator as well as the photographers Bob Gruen, Iain Macmillan and David Nutter.
Rorie Katz was born in New York, graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and has worked with the United Nations Postal Administration since 1997. In 2008 she became Head of the Graphics and Communication department. She has designed hundreds of stamps over the years. She absolutely loves the entire design process and is very proud to work for the United Nations. She and her team have had the pleasure of working with artists and designers from around the world. “Designing postage stamps is my way of promoting the important issues of the United Nations in tiny images that travel the world through the mail. It is an honor and a privilege to be selected for this award for the most popular music stamp of 2021.”
This year there were 65 stamps from 52 postal administrations to choose from. Collectors from 61 countries took part in the online voting. The stamp depicting the harpist Alice Giles from the series “Antarctic Arts Fellowship”, received 165 votes (5.54%) and came second. It was designed by Sharon Rodziewicz and published by the Australian Post for the Australian Antarctic Territory on 16.3.2021.
On September 6, 2021, a series of well-known fairy tales designed by Henri Galeron was released in France. With 153 votes (5.14%), the “Bremen Town Musicians” took third place in the vote for the most popular music stamp 2021.
